The Small Mississippi Town, Holly Springs Is A Must-Visit For Hummingbird Enthusiasts

Like tiny works of art, hummingbirds are a real treat for the eyes. Luckily, the little birds are a common sight here in the Magnolia State. However, there’s one town where sightings are a bit more common. Not only is the colorful creature the local mascot, but it’s also the guest of honor at the town’s annual festival. Take a look:
Located near the Delta, Holly Springs is a small town that’s most known for its rich history.
In addition to an array of properties on the National Register of Historic Places, the town boasts several historic districts, including Southwest Holly Springs Historic District, Holly Springs Courthouse Square Historic District, Depot-Compress Historic District, and East Holly Springs Historic District. Furthermore, it’s home to Hillcrest Cemetery, which has been dubbed Little Arlington of the South.
But it’s not just history that’s abundant in Holly Springs. Hummingbirds are also pretty prevalent.
As the town’s mascot, the colorful bird can be found throughout Holly Springs – from the water tower to marketing materials distributed by Holly Springs Tourism.
No hummingbird-centric town would be complete without a restaurant that serves Hummingbird Cake – and in Holly Springs, that restaurant is Southern Eatery.
The 2,600-acre Audubon Center is home to over 200 species of birds, including hummingbirds. Providing the ideal habitat for hummingbirds, Strawberry Plains is the perfect place to get close-up views of the lovely little birds.
Strawberry Plains even hosts an annual celebration in honor of hummingbirds. Held every September for the past 20 years, the Hummingbird Migration and Nature Celebration is one of the South’s biggest nature festivals.
In addition to up-close views of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds being banded and released, the fest includes guest speakers, guided nature walks, live animal shows, wagon rides, vendors, arts and crafts, and more.
