One of the best places to explore yurt camping in the Land of 10,000 Lakes is Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, where you’ll find a veritable yurt village in Minnesota.
Located near Brainerd, Cuyuna Country Recreation Area is a year-round mecca for outdoor enthusiasts.
And its veritable yurt village, in Minnesota lake country, makes it a perfect place for a play-and-stay vacay.
Cuyuna Country sits on the sites of abandoned iron ore mining operations that were subsequently reclaimed.
The recreation area contains six natural lakes, as well as 15 mining pits that eventually filled with crystal clear water - all in all, it boasts 25 miles of shoreline within 5,000 acres of mostly-forested land.
Those who wish to set up base camp in the area, but not sleep in a tent, will be pleased to know that three yurt sites are situated on the shore of Yawkey Mine Lake.
The area’s most popular attraction is probably its its miles of sweet single track, which draws mountain bikers from all over the state.
The recreation area’s many lakes afford anglers the chance to chase trout (for those with a trout stamp), bass, crappie, and northern pike.
Paddlers will enjoy exploring the miles of pristine shoreline.
The yurts are available year-round and make ideal headquarters for winter sports enthusiasts in the recreation area.
Snowmobilers will appreciate the miles of dedicated trails at Cuyuna Country.
Don’t worry, though, the area also offers plenty of opportunities for non-motorized winter sports, such as fat biking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing.
The yurts are heated and offer plenty of space for eating, board games, or just relaxing.
Like all state park yurts, those at Cuyuna Country have plenty of bunk space, so bring your friends and family.
If you happen to pass through Brainerd on your way to or from (or both) Cuyuna Country, be sure to stop in at The Barn for a lip-smacking slice of pie.
Have you visited Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area, or have you stayed in one of the other yurts in the Minnesota State Park system?
