The Friendly Small Town in Minnesota That’s Perfect for a Summer Day Trip

If you’re looking for a relaxing escape from the crowded tourist spots this season, there’s a little corner of southeastern Minnesota that feels like a breath of fresh air from a limestone bluff. With a population of just over 400 residents, Fountain is the kind of place where you’ll feel like a local the moment you step out of your car. It's a walkable, peaceful, and scenic community that'll make you slow down and think about staying a while. Unlike busier small towns in Minnesota, Fountain's charm lies in its quiet streets—the lack of bustle, if you will—and the genuine friendliness of the folks who live here. It’s a wonderful spot to start a Bluff Country road trip, especially in the summer, when the trees are lush and at their fullest, and in autumn, when the fall foliage on the bluffs is at its most eye-popping.

Explore Bluff Country on the Root River State Trail

One of the biggest draws to the area is the Root River State Trail, and Fountain holds the proud distinction of being its western terminus. This 42-mile paved trail winds through the rugged limestone bluffs and hardwood forests of the Root River Valley, offering some of the most spectacular views in the state and making it one of my favorite Minnesota day trip destinations. In the summer, you’ll find plenty of shade in the shadows of the bluffs, and come fall, the valley's colors are best seen from the seat of a bike.

Learn About Minnesota's Driftless Area and Sinkhole Geology

Another thing that makes Fountain unique is its location in the Driftless Area—a region the glaciers missed during the last ice age. The lack of glacial attention left behind a fascinating karst landscape in this part of the state, resulting in numerous caves and sinkholes. Fountain, in fact, has proclaimed itself “The Sink Hole Capital of the U.S.A.” While you won’t see gaping holes swallowing up city blocks, the surrounding farm fields are dotted with small stands of trees that mark the locations of these limestone depressions.

For a deeper dive into the region’s heritage, you should definitely stop by the Fillmore County History Center. In addition to a whole bunch of information about Driftless geology, the museum features exhibits on rural life, a collection of Oliver tractors, and a genealogy library for those looking to trace their local roots. It’s a great way to learn more about the human history that shaped this friendly small town in Minnesota before you head back out to explore more.

Where To Eat and Drink in Fountain

Exploring the Bluff Country, you can work up a serious thirst. Fortunately, there’s a fantastic spot just a couple of miles out of town. Sugar Creek Vineyard and Meadery, located about 2 miles west of Fountain on County Road 8, is a fine place to wet your whistle. It offers a unique selection of meads and wines made with local ingredients. You can enjoy a tasting on their covered decks or relax inside next to a crackling fireplace. If you’re looking for more of a meal, the Village Square of Fountain is a local staple known for its rib-sticking, down-home comfort food and delicious pizza. Keep in mind that they don't open until 4 p.m. and generally close up by 7 or 8 p.m., so you’ll want to plan your dining schedule accordingly.
