Who says you have to visit a big city to experience great art? Though the Twin Cities are home to some famous works of art by both world-renowned and up-and-coming artists, there are plenty of small towns throughout the state that offer artsy events and attractions created by locals. These 11 artsy towns in Minnesota are perfect for a whimsical day trip.

1. Ely

You may think of Ely as the gateway to the Boundary Waters, but this little town of 3,400 people has a sizeable art community. It's great to visit at any time, but you'll really get a taste of the local art scene if you visit during the Blueberry Arts Festival at the end of July every year.

2. Stillwater

Is it any wonder that one of Minnesota's most beautiful towns is also one of its most artsy? There are quite a few galleries in town that feature work by local potters, painters, and photographers. You'll walk away from your visit with a new appreciation for art - and maybe a new piece for your home, too!

3. Grand Marais

This town of about 1,300 people is known for its gorgeous location right on the shores of Lake Superior. But between fishing, hiking, and sampling the World's Best Donuts, it's wise to squeeze in some local art. After all, Grand Marais is home to the Grand Marais Art Colony. This group of artists offers classes, residencies, and more, to aspiring and established artists alike. There are plenty of opportunities to take part in the art community here, whether it's by browsing galleries independently or checking out the art on display at the annual Fisherman's Picnic.

4. Afton

Most people haven't heard of Afton, Minnesota. And those that have likely know it for its location along the St. Croix River. But did you know it's also a thriving art community? Art in the Park is an annual outdoor arts festival held every fall. It features food vendors, live entertainment and, of course, plenty of art. More than 75 vendors line up to show off what they've been working on. If you're an art appreciator, you may want to show up to take a few pieces home!

5. Pine City

Do you love live theater? Then you'll want to visit this under-the-radar town in east-central Minnesota. The Pine City Heritage Players have been performing for the community since 1985, and they're still going strong. They pull in audiences from Pine City and the surrounding communities to delight in great local actors performing both big Broadway hits and lesser known productions. Next on the radar? Shrek the Music, opening on July 19, 2018.

6. Taylors Falls

What's not to love about Taylors Falls? The views of the St. Croix River alone are enough to inspire anyone. There are a few galleries in town, as well as the enormous Franconia Sculpture Garden down the road in nearby Shafer. If you love ceramics, you won't want to miss out on the annual St. Croix Valley Pottery Tour each spring.

7. Lanesboro

In southeastern Minnesota, Lanesboro is one of the most charming towns you'll ever come across. Nestled in the rolling hills of Minnesota's bluff country, it offers endless opportunity for fun. Perusing the cute shops and restaurants, biking the Root River Trail, and floating down the Root River itself are all popular activities. But this small town has a love of the arts, too. An artist-in-residence program ensures fresh, creative voices in the community, and the Lanesboro Arts organization offers many events dedicated to getting artistic. This artsy community is a must-visit spot!

8. Little Falls

Little Falls may be small, but they make up for their size in love of arts. This community is home to Great River Arts, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to fostering arts in this area of rural Minnesota. Live music, theater, and plenty of hands-on classes and activities make it easy for members of the community - and visitors - to take part in the local art scene.

9. Lake City

This lovely spot along the beautiful Lake Pepin is an art lover's paradise. Lake City Area Arts makes it easy to get involved by hosting community events promote visual and performing arts in the local community. In addition, Lake City is home to art galleries that make it easy for visitors to bring home something special from their day trip to the town.

10. Luverne

It may be a surprise to some that a tiny town in southwestern Minnesota would have such a vibrant art community. But Luverne's prairie location must provide a lot of inspiration for local artists. The Brandenburg Gallery houses works by many local artists, and the Hallstrom Glass Studio is full of gorgeously delicate works that make perfect souvenirs and gifts. If you're ever in this artsy little town, definitely make time to stop.
