Located between Green and Duck Lakes, people first knew this 187-acre preserve as "Pine Park." It had been purchased by the Michigan Legislature in 1917 for a screaming deal— just $60,000— and remains today one of the few places where Michiganders can easily see the old-growth red pines that once covered our state.
Although it was a public space for about three years prior, the Michigan State Park Commission took over stewardship of the property in 1920, making this local gem 104 years old!
If you love some al fresco fun, you should know that Interlochen hosts a broad range of outdoor activities. Visitors can swim, fish, hike, boat, and warm up fireside at a well-appointed campsite.
Though it retains enough "wild" to stoke the possibility of adventure, this community park is well-suited for families, offering numerous covered areas for potluck-style dining, and endless quiet spots for introverted folks to take in the views and escape the din of the in-laws.
The lakes are popular among boaters, who access the water via three launches. Fish, bring a book, or pack a lunch to enjoy among the bobbing waves. Glorious sunsets are a regular occurance at Interlochen, transforming a regular ol' day at the water into a memorable experience worth bringing someone special.
Though the park is busiest in summer, it's also a great place to enjoy Michigan's autumnal colors, and the nippier temperatures send less hardy campers for the hills, leaving the grounds more peaceful.
And for animal lovers like me, the best news is saved for last! Dogs are welcome at Interlochen State Park. Just make sure they stay leashed; they aren't the only critters roaming around.
Are you craving lakeside relaxation? Combine a beachy getaway with a bite of local history at Interlochen State Park, the oldest state park in Michigan. Located a short drive from Traverse City, it's the perfect place to feel like you've gotten away from it all without having to sacrifice the creature comforts of civilization. Ideal for families, couples, and the dog-obsessed, I can't recommend this special spot enough.
