By foot or by car, there’s something exhilarating about crossing a bridge. Whether you’re making your way across a massive expanse or simply trekking along a small bridge in the woods, it’s undeniably fun to explore the history and design of these unique structures. If you’re fascinated by bridges, here are seven that should be checked out in and around the Motor City.
We would be remiss to write a piece about bridges in Detroit without mentioning the city’s most famous structure: the iconic Ambassador. Every Motor City resident should drive across the sprawling 7,500-foot bridge, which offers entry from Detroit to Ontario, at least once in their life. During your jaunt, you’ll enjoy brilliant views of the Detroit River and the city skyline in the distance.
This brilliant bridge extends for 2,193 feet and consists of 19 beautiful arches that dip into the Detroit River. Its main purpose is to transport traffic from the city of Detroit onto Belle Isle, Detroit’s iconic island park. For most Detroiters, the MacArthur Bridge is another icon, first opening back in 1923.
It’s impossible to miss this towering structure, which stretches across six lanes of traffic on I-94. If you’ve ever lived or traveled near Taylor, you’ve almost certainly crossed this eye-catching bridge at least once. With its blue steel beams and 250-foot length, the Gateway Bridge stands out.
Make your way to Ann Arbor to check out this spectacular bridge, sometimes referred to as the East Delhi Bridge, which carries traffic over the beautiful Huron River. Whether you’re enjoying the view from the water or crossing on your way to spend time at Delhi Metropark, you’ll easily gain an appreciation for this one-of-a-kind Metro Detroit bridge.
You’ll have to venture about an hour and 15 minutes from the Motor City to appreciate this beloved bridge, but we think it’s worth the trek. Much like the Ambassador, the Blue Water Bridge connects Michiganders to neighboring Ontario. At an impressive 6,178 feet across, the bridge is a commanding presence in Port Huron and serves as a subject for many gorgeous photos.
This lovely island park in the community of Flat Rock is perfect for a day of fresh air and relaxation, whether you’re enjoying a picnic or taking a stroll with loved ones. If you’re exploring by foot, you’ll enjoy a beautiful bridge that crosses the stunning Huron River and peaceful views.
Greenfield Village at Dearborn’s Henry Ford Museum is one of Metro Detroit’s most fascinating attractions, offering visitors the chance to step back in time and immerse themselves in living history displays. The village also houses Ackley Covered Bridge, a structure that was first built in 1832 in Pennsylvania before moving to Michigan in 1937. Today, guests can stroll through and snap photos of the oak and stone bridge.
