This stunning beach in Massachusetts offers miles and miles of clean sand and some of the best views in the state. Cahoon Hollow Beach is a Cape Cod treasure and perfect for a beach day. However, recent changes to the beach mean that it’s likely to receive far less traffic than in past years, making this out-of-the-way beach even more appealing for people looking to avoid the crowds.
Here’s the situation. Cahoon Hollow Beach is definitely secluded, but it’s an open local secret and is usually one of the more popular beaches in Wellfleet. However, due to a winter of fierce storms, the parking lot at the beach itself has been closed this year.
This means that tourists and even locals who aren’t in the know will likely drive right to the shore and expect to park, but will have to abort when they see the lack of parking. However, now that you’re in the know, you can expect to enjoy one of Cape Cod’s most beautiful beaches without nearly as much company as in past years.
So how should you best visit the beach? Biking in from town is definitely a great option. If the whole gang doesn’t have bikes, having the driver drop off the crew at the beach, park in town, and then bike back is another. If you’re not afraid of a little hiking, it’s also possible to walk right to the beach.
Once you arrive, prepare for some truly epic views. Grab lunch at The Beachcomber above the beach, or head straight down to the sand to start enjoying the sun and surf. You’ll have to take one of two long, steep paths down to the water, but the precarious journey is worth it.
Cahoon Hollow’s main claim to fame is the dramatic dune landscape that can be admired from up top or down below. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more photogenic beach. There are lifeguards on duty during the summer season and restrooms are available. The quieter stretches of this beach are actually good spots to hunt for sea glass, especially after a storm. While you’re there, you might as well check out the rest of the National Seashore.
Even though people in the area are definitely aware of this Cahoon Hollow, the trickiness of the parking situation will likely prevent droves of tourists from setting up camp on the sand. However, if you’re in the know, you can successfully have one of the loveliest beach days of the summer at this beautiful beach.
