While you might not be able to find towering fortresses and elven cities in the Bay State, you can find a (nearly) enchanted forest filled with fairy pools and sun-dappled paths. One of the most unique hiking trails in Massachusetts, the trail begins in a stunted oak and pine forest filled with the lively sounds of wildlife. You’ll make your way through mature woodland and finally to one of the most breathtaking areas in Massachusetts – the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp.
Part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, this area is totally unique in Massachusetts. It was created during the last Ice Age and features a layer of peat that is 24 feet deep. The massive, towering trees have remarkably straight trunks that make it feel as if you’re wandering through a forest of pale marble columns.
When you are deep in the swamp, you feel utterly and blissfully isolated. No traffic sounds, no far-off chatter – just the chirping of birds and the gentle rustling of the leaves.
There’s plenty of interesting plant life to check out. From Pink Beefsteak fungus to delicate white flowers that seem plucked straight from the pages of Lord of the Rings, you’ll be surrounded by natural beauty on all sides.
The entire loop trail is around 1.2 miles and will take you about one hour to complete.
This is a great spot to explore even if you don’t consider yourself a "hiker." The swamp portion of the trail is almost completely level and 100 percent boardwalk. On the return route, you’ll travel across soft sand, and there are stairs to help you up where the trail gains some elevation.
To find this enchanting natural treasure, head to the Cape Cod National Seashore in Wellfleet at 195 Marconi Station Road. At the stop light, turn east off Route 6 into the Marconi Station Area, South Wellfleet. Follow brown signs to the Marconi Site and White Cedar Swamp.
