This pretty trail through the woods of Purgatory Chasm State Park will give you a dose of fresh and a hit of natural beauty.
Located in the town of Sutton, this state park is known for its dramatic ravine. Purgatory Chasm is littered with magnificent boulders and heart pounding views.
Charley’s Loop Trail is one of the best ways to see the chasm and the surrounding forest. It’s only about 1.7 miles long, so it’s perfect for anyone looking for a quick afternoon of hiking.
You’ll wind your way through lush wooded groves and past granite walls that rise as high as 70 feet. The area is thought to have been carved out by glaciers more than 14,000 years ago.
Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water if you’re hiking in warm weather, as some parts of the trail practically beg you to scramble up on the boulders for a better view of the gorgeous foliage. Don’t forget to bring your camera to this one.
The trail is moderately trafficked in peak season, which runs from about April to September. This means that while you might bump into the odd hiker, you should have plenty of space to roam in solitude.
