Marylanders already know that our state has tons of great parks to explore. If you’re looking for a place to picnic amongst the wildflowers, we have that. Or if you’re looking for a quiet place to bring the family for a summer day of outdoor fun, we have that, too. With so many options, it can be easy to overlook the more remote parks in Maryland. There are lots of beautiful ones the Old Line State has to offer, and once you see Black Hill Regional Park, you’ll be as convinced as I was that it’s the perfect place to escape.
Black Hill Park may be out there distance-wise, but it is absolutely huge. There are over 2,000 acres of land to explore and enjoy, and there’s even a dog park and exercise area for your pets.
I went to Black Hill Park with my family and spent hours wandering through the trails. There are over 20 miles of paths, both paved or natural, that crisscross the park area. You can follow the paved paths until you find a natural dirt trail that suits your fancy.
When it comes to secluded parks in Maryland, this one will be at the top of your list.
This park is also home to Little Seneca Lake, which is one of the deepest lakes in Montgomery County. Despite “little” being in the name, the lake is huge and is just begging to be explored from the seat of a kayak. There are even water trail maps available if you feel like roaming for a while!
Black Hill Park is named after the eponymous gold mine that was established here in the mid-19th century. While there wasn’t much gold to be found, that didn’t stop prospectors from trying. The mine was eventually converted into a bomb shelter, but the doors can still be spotted around the site.
There’s also a pretty cool visitor center as well, located in this scenic perch you’ll encounter if you follow the paved path.
Scattered throughout the park are tons of small playgrounds and pavilions where you and your family can enjoy a day out in the sun. There are volleyball courts, jungle gyms, and so much more!
If you've been searching for "secluded parks near me" or "remote park near me," you've got a great option here. Given that there are 20 miles of trails to wander through, a day out at Black Hill Park can quickly turn into a pretty intense hike.
