Maine winters are notoriously harsh. Cold temperatures, freezing rain, and snow along with lots of wind can make leaving the house seem like an Olympic event. In fact, this last winter might be one of the worst in recent memory. But, before you begin an arduous training program to prepare for the jumps, hurdles, and sprints that are necessary just to run an errand, read what we’ve just learned from this year’s Farmer’s Almanac!

Last winter's weather was one for the record books.

Temperatures were the coldest they'd been since the 1970s and lasted for a longer period of time than ever before. In fact, most of January was a blur of cold and wind.
Weather-related power outages, along with unexpected ice storms, lasted through April.

The opening day of the Portland Sea Dogs minor league game against Binghamton was canceled and rescheduled due to weather. And that's in Southern Maine! Northern Maine saw even colder temperatures, snow, and ice.
But, there's hope for our upcoming winter!

According to the Farmer's Almanac Long Range Weather Forecast, Maine is looking at a positively warmer winter in 2018 and 2019.

This winter will be milder than what we'd expect for Maine.

While temperatures might be warmer, we'll likely receive more rain than average. The good news is that snowfall levels will probably be a lot more normal than last year.

Coldest temps will occur in late December going into mid-January. After a few warm days, the cold will come back in late January through early February and then again in mid to late February.

By the time we get to April and May, the snow will make way for more rain than usual.
