Hiking in Maine any time of year is one of the best ways to get a good sense of all that this state can offer. While we love the local shops and restaurants, so much of what makes this place special is the landscape. We love how much it changes depending on where and when you visit. But we also love just how fabulously unique some of the regions can be. This hike, located in Oxford County, offers some truly magnificent outdoor time and it's worth the trip.
The town of Greenwood in Oxford County offers some of the best Maine landscape, but we especially love one particular hike here!
The 3.9-mile out-and-back trail is made up of both logging road and trail and it leads right to some of the coolest caves around!
The area is full of trees and plenty of rocks so you'll want to make sure you take caution as you make your way along.
As you get closer to the ice caves, you'll begin to see some signs made by other visitors.
And about 2 miles in you'll reach the caves. These caves are cold enough to keep ice even when the temps outside might seem too warm.
And most of the area is totally explorable.
Be sure to bring a headlamp to stay safe, but also make sure you have a sense of curiosity. If you do, you'll love it here!
In the winter you'll find the conditions even more special. Enjoy the snowy trail, but consider bringing along crampons.
Once you've explored the caves, head on back the same way you came!
Enjoy the trees, the trail, and the caves and you'll have a better sense of just why Maine is so special.
The Greenwood Ice Caves can be accessed year-round and is great for people who aren't looking for something strenuous. You can learn more about the trail and see more photos and reviews from people who have visited by checking out alltrails.com.
As you work to explore more of the state, consider heading to one of our favorite regions! The views from the incredible 2.7-mile Bold Coast Trail in Maine are pretty as a picture!
