Moosehead Lake has attracted people to its shores for centuries. The mountains, rivers, and freshwater lake have been a source of beauty and prosperity for the region for just as long.
The massive fresh-water lake is one of the largest in the nation and encompasses more than 80 islands. The lake is the perfect destination for anyone who loves the outdoors.
When you first arrive, you may want to get the lay of the land. Taking a tour of the lake on an early 20th century steamboat is a super fun way to learn about the nature and history of the area.
Rent a kayak for the day at one of the many rental shops. A Few adventurous Mainers like to make a trip out of kayaking along the entire shoreline of Moosehead Lake. However, you don't have to see it all to enjoy a day out on the water.
Take a break from water activities and explore the hiking trails around the lake. There are many trails to choose from and cater to every experience level. The Moosehead Visitor's Center in Greenville has maps of all the area trails and parks.
A few historical areas of significance can be found around the lake. In 1963, a B-52 bomber crashed on Elephant Mountain near Greenville. Today the site and the wreckage serve as a monument to the men lost in the crash. The Center for Moosehead History and the Moosehead Historical Society are also worth investigating!
Of course moose and other wildlife are abundant around the lake. In fact, in this region of Maine moose outnumber humans three-to-one. Moosehead Lake is also very popular with fishing and birding enthusiasts as well.
Lay your head down at one of the many beautiful cabins or lodges in the area. Visitors can find camping sites, hotel rooms, and bed-and-breakfast stays all around the lake communities.
