The Downeast Scenic Railroad runs on a portion of the Maine Shore Line Railroad, which was completed all the way back in 1883.
The excursion train ride is a great way to relive a piece of Maine history while taking in some of the best views in the state!
History buffs will love that these beautiful trips take place on lovingly restored trains that make it feel as though riders are traveling through the state decades in the past.
The ride is simple but comfortable and the view outside is easy to take in.
The journey begins at the Washington Junction rail yard on the boarding platform outside Ellsworth. From here riders continue for six miles to the next station where the engine is moved from the back to the front of the train for the six-mile return trip.
Watching and learning about the machinery is great for train-lovers. And those who are here for the views will have the opportunity to take in rivers and streams.
The train also travels through wetlands and marsh.
The views continue as the route winds through the small towns with views of homes, schools and local churches.
By the time the train arrives back in the station riders will feel like they've had a true taste of what Maine is all about!
