Each day in Vacationland is another opportunity for some of the best natural surroundings in New England. But you don't need to strap on your hiking boots to experience what this incredible state has to offer. This boardwalk trail in Maine - Orono, to be exact - will have you immersed in nature without the uphill slog. It might just be one of the best hikes in Maine!
The Orono Bog Boardwalk trail is a 1-mile boardwalk loop beginning at the Bangor City Forest.
Once you've been on the trail for about 800 feet, you'll officially cross into Orono where the trail is owned by the University of Maine.
The unique trail is a great way to get to know more about Maine's bogs.
It's completely wheelchair accessible, and also makes for a great place to take children in strollers.
As you meander along the mile-long boardwalk, you'll experience a beautiful range of changing plants and natural environments.
With its tall trees and sometimes misty feel, there are portions that will make you feel as though you've been transported to an entirely different region of the US.
Throughout the walk, you'll find a number of signs with illustrations of local bog plants and animals, as well as detailed explanations that bring life to your experience.
Eventually, the trees open up to reveal the wide-open bog covered in peat moss.
In 1974, the National Park Service designated the Orono Bog as a National Natural Landmark.
And, in 2010, The Maine Disability Education Association awarded the Boardwalk and volunteers a Certificate of Appreciation.
It's a beautiful place to visit on both sunny days and those quintessential foggy Maine days.
The Orono Bog Boardwalk will open for the season on May 1st at 7am.
