Maine is lovely and we all know that. From the beauty of the coast to the lush forested inland, there’s little to complain about when it comes to the nature of the state. But for all the beauty we’re not without our creepy stories. We don’t have many, but the handful of unsolved mysteries we do have continue to have people scratching their heads.
Let’s take a trip back to August 1976. This was when four friends met to have an adventure in the Allagash Wilderness for about two weeks. The group planned to camp their way through this desolate part of Maine while enjoying the great outdoors.
But, one night deep in this Northern Maine region, the friends saw an unexplainable bright light on the water. The light seemed to follow them as they paddled on the water. Each one noticed it and then they each noticed that it had disappeared.
They didn’t think of it much until the light returned two nights later. Sitting on their small boat they saw the light beam down on them. They paddled back to the campsite but have no memory of doing this. Instead, they all remember simply just... being back and the light being gone.
Once they returned they saw that the fire they’d made just before leaving was now completely gone. It was as if they’d been gone for hours rather than just the few minutes it took to paddle out and paddle back.
The next six days of their trip was uneventful. No strange lights and no missing memories. When they arrived back at home they told their friends and families of the strange occurrence, but then moved on with their lives.
Until 1988 when two of the men began having nightmares. The dreams featured four men wearing no clothes on a bench and a clear feeling of terror. When they realized they’d shared the same dream they hired a UFO researching to help them regain some memories of what might have happened that night deep in the woods. Under hypnosis they each recalled being abducted during the trip in 1976.
And, for those not sure they believe the story it’s important to note that each of the men passed a later polygraph test.
Today, the case has never been solved. The four men have never wavered from their telling of the tale and nobody has ever been able to prove that it’s false.
