The Atchafalaya Basin contains nearly one million acres of swamps, bottomland hardwoods, bayous, and lakes that flow throughout southern Louisiana. It’s easily one of the most scenic places in Louisiana, and many people travel from all over the world to check it off their bucket list. Swamp tours are one of the most popular ways to see the sights of the Atchafalaya, but for those that prefer to stay on land, this hiking trail is just what you’re looking for.
Lake Fausse Pointe State Park is located in both St. Martin and Iberia Parish, right in the heart of the Atchafalaya Basin.
When you want to get away from it all, this is the place.
With 6,000 acres to explore, you’ll want to get an early start so you have plenty of time to tackle the trails.
There are a handful of trails within the park, each one more scenic than the next.
Trail C, also known as Barred Owl Trek, is a 3.3 mile trail that will take you around the perimeter of the park, giving you a front-row seat to the swamps and marshlands that surround you.
The trail will take about 2-3 hours to complete.
It's a great trail for kids to explore too, so bring the whole family out for a day of adventure.
There are several footbridges along the trail. Stop for a spell and do a little bird watching.
There's plenty of wildlife within the park, and if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one!
Alligators, turtles, and snakes are the usual suspects in these swamplands but black bears, bobcats, and bald eagles have also been spotted in these areas, so keep your eyes peeled.
You might even find a quiet spot to do a little fishing.
There are several cabins if you want to extend your stay.
