The Small Louisiana Town Of Ville Platte Has More Outdoor Attractions Than Any Other Place In The State
Ville Platte is a sleepy little town just northwest of Cajun Country that’s home to fewer than 10,000 residents. Home to both Chicot State Park and the Louisiana State Arboretum, Ville Platte is a nature lover’s dream and the perfect spot for anyone looking to spend a few days enjoying the great outdoors.
One of the oldest state parks in Louisiana, Chicot State Park boasts 6,400 acres of some of the most stunning Louisiana landscapes you’ve ever seen.
It’s the largest state park in the state, so rest assured you’ll never be bored.
Nestled around the 2,000-acre man-made lake, you’re practically guaranteed to have a view of Lake Chicot no matter where you look.
There are several hiking trails to explore, including kid’s trails as well as an extensive 22-mile hiking trail that will take you around the entire lake.
The boardwalk section of the trail is absolutely stunning and allows you to traverse through sections of the park you wouldn't be able to otherwise.
Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along the way. The usual suspects include your favorite swamp critters like alligators and turtles, but you could also catch a glimpse of a deer or a swamp rabbit in the tree line.
Boating and canoeing are popular pastimes here. Anglers will want to bring their rods and reels because the lake is home to largemouth bass, crappie, and bluegill.
There’s also an eight-mile canoe trail that you can take to experience the park from an entirely new perspective. You can either bring your own kayak/canoe or rent a canoe from the park.
As if that wasn't enough, the Louisiana State Arboretum is located within the park, and this natural oasis boasts even more natural landscape to enjoy.
The Louisiana State Arboretum is the oldest state-supported arboretum in the country, and the trails here are short enough for all age groups and skill levels to enjoy.
Plus, informational placards along the way make it an educational experience, too.
While tent camping and RV slots are both available, you may be tempted to treat yourself to one of the incredible
waterfront cabins at Chicot State Park. Check out the park’s website for rates and information.
