Palmetto Island State Park is located in Abbeville, just south of Lafayette, Louisiana.
We often think about state parks being around for decades, but this hidden gem opened to the public in 2010, making it one of the newest parks in the Louisiana State Park system.
Named after the abundance of palmettos that grow in the area, nature lovers will find this 1,300-acre park a picture-perfect paradise.
River rats will love the park too since it's nestled along the scenic Vermilion River. There's a boat launch for those looking to do a little fishing, but you can also drop a line from the shoreline if you don't want to go through the trouble of bringing your boat.

There's a short-and-sweet nature trail that will lead you throughout the park.
Black bears have been spotted in the park, so be sure to use the proper receptacles to throw your trash away, and remember, never feed or provoke the wildlife! The chances of seeing the elusive Louisiana black bear is pretty rare ... but never impossible.
The splash pad is an ideal way to cool down during those hot summer months.
There are plenty of shaded areas and picnic benches peppered around so you can watch your little ones splash around.
After a full day of exploring and adventure, head back to your campsite to cook up that freshly caught fish and listen to the sights and sounds of the wetlands.
