This Seafood Hotspot In Louisiana Has Been Serving Up Some Of The Best Oysters Since 1952

When it comes to seafood, Louisiana certainly reigns supreme. From gumbo to po’boys, we’ll incorporate seafood into any dish we can, and boy are we good at it. There’s one restaurant in the northern part of the state that’s home to some of the best seafood in Louisiana, and they’ve been at it for nearly 70 years.

Welcome to The Mohawk Tavern, a longtime favorite seafood restaurant in Monroe, Louisiana.

It may not look like much from the outside, but some of the most delicious seafood in town is hiding behind these walls.

Established in 1952 by Tom and Alline Fontana, The Mohawk Tavern is Monroe’s oldest restaurant, and it’s still owned and operated by the same family.

The third generation has picked up the torch, much to the delight of hungry locals.

Walking into The Mohawk Tavern is like walking into the past.

It’s a no-frills, all-flavor type of joint. Memories of years past adorn the walls, and unique antiques will catch your eye everywhere you look. There’s even an old cigarette machine (not stocked). Remember those?

When it comes to the menu, make sure you come hungry.

You'll find all your favorite seafood specialities here.

They also have daily lunch specials.

Specials might include gumbo, fried shrimp, and fried catfish.

For heartier appetites, indulge in one of the sinfully delicious seafood pasta dishes.

But the real star of the show at the Mohawk Tavern are the oysters.

Served on the half shell and accompanied by all the most popular dips, it's not hard to find yourself ordering another platter after kicking back half a dozen of these bad boys.

Another round, anyone?
