Next time you find yourself in St. Tammany Parish, make sure you find the time to swing by this timeless treasure. You’ll find H.J. Smith’s Son General Store and Museum tucked away in the heart of historic downtown Covington.
Family owned and operated since 1876, this rustic general store will make you think you’ve stepped back in time from the moment you walk up the steps.
Part general store, part museum, H.J. Smith’s Son houses hundreds of items ranging from 1870 through the early 1900s.
You never know what you’ll stumble across in here. You'll want to spend some time really checking everything out, as it can seem a little cluttered at first.
From old farming tools to 1920s gas pumps, there's quite the assortment of history here. There's even an antique iron coffin from the yellow fever epidemic in the 1850s.
Of course, you’ll also find all your needs for your next home project. Hardware, tools, gardening supplies all line the newer part of the store.
But the museum side of the store is truly something special.
Don’t forget to check out the petrified rat. That’s certainly something you don’t see every day!
