Louisiana's only National Forest, the Kisatchie National Forest, featured over 600,000 acres of primitive, rugged landscape that showcases a whole new side of Louisiana. Sprawling across seven parishes across central and northern Louisiana, there are countless trails that could take a lifetime to hike them all, but there's one, in particular, that should move to the top of your bucket list, as it's one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Louisiana.
When it comes to outdoor adventure, it's hard to beat the Kisatchie National Forest.
From the three-mile Loop Trails to the epic, 23-mile Azalea Trail, the forest is full of primitive trails that showcase a side of Louisiana not often seen.
The Backbone Trail is one of the top trails in the forest.
The trail clocks in at roughly 14 miles, and you'll want to come prepared. This isn't your leisurely boardwalk stroll.
This epic trail will have you crossing streams, bayous, and throughout the rugged hills. While much of the trail is shaded, there are some parts that you may want a hat or some sunglasses for. As always, bring bug spray.
There is some slight elevation to the trail, but nothing too steep. This is Louisiana, after all.
But you'll be met with some surprising views along the trail.
Pull up a rock and sit for a spell and take in that view. You earned it!
It's not often you get to see a treetop sunset in Louisiana.
There are several campsites peppered around the trail if you'd like to spend a night camping under the stars.
Imagine waking up to this view. Sensational!
Just remember to pack out what you pack in so that others can also enjoy the trail for years to come.
