There are all sorts of hiking trails throughout the state of Kentucky, so every outdoor-lover can experience his or her own sense of adventure. You can stick to a paved path around a lake or go completely off-grid, deep in the woods. Of course, the most beautiful scenery often comes with a little bit of work - and adventure - but it's always worth it. Located in London within Daniel Boone National Forest, the Van Hook Falls Trail is certainly not the easiest hike in our state, but it's one of the best. You'll experience so much along this path, including several scenic waterfalls, so a visit here is definitely worth lacing up those hiking boots.

The Van Hook Falls Trail is an out-and-back adventure that totals five miles of natural beauty. It's located in the town of London at the Sheltowee Trace Trailhead, found at the junction of KY-192 and KY-1193.

When the conditions are right, this trail is considered to be one of the most scenic and rewarding in Kentucky. After parking in the small lot and crossing the street to the trailhead, prepare to be greeted by a bit of everything Kentucky has to offer.

Along the trail, you'll find open woodlands and many encounters with water. A visit is best timed after a rainfall, so the streams and falls are running at full steam, but of course, that means conditions will likely be very muddy.

Lace up those hiking boots tightly before hitting the trail, but don't avoid it because of the mud. Be prepared for slick conditions, take caution, and then relax and enjoy the waterfalls you'll see along the trail.

After about a mile and a half, you'll come across this beauty. If you visit during dry seasons, it may be reduced to just a small pool of water, but at its best, this is a magical discovery and perfect photo opportunity.

As you near Van Hook Falls, you'll come across two bridges that take you across the creeks. This area also has large rock formations, so it's a lovely spot to rest about halfway through your adventure.

After crossing Cane Creek, the 40-foot Van Hook Falls appears just a short distance down the trail. The water plummets into a pool below after rainstorms and as the snow melts in springtime, providing a beautiful reward for tackling this moderately difficult trail.

As you make your way back, take time to again notice all of the natural wonders that decorate this Kentucky trail. A waterfall hike is a great way to spend a day in the Bluegrass State, and this lesser-known destination is ideal for a waterfall-chasing adventure.
