If you were ever to take a food tour of Kentucky, you'd have to include several stops at local, family-owned delis. Our state is filled with shops that offer classic sandwiches in a nostalgic environment, but there’s one such deli that deserves a spot at the top of your must-visit list: Kirchhoff's Bakery & Deli in Paducah. This fifth-generation eatery may just be the oldest deli in Kentucky and it will take you straight to sandwich heaven.
The story of Kirchhoff's Bakery & Deli dates all the way back to 1873 when Franz and Hannah Kirchhoff opened a small bakery in Paducah. Their freshly-baked bread was loved by locals, as well as those traveling along the Ohio River.
The family originally lived above the bakery, and Kirchhoff's son and grandson eventually joined the operation. The bakery was a leading business in the area until 1957, but that wasn't the last time Kentucky would hear of the Kirchhoff family.
The Kirchhoff family’s story picked back up when Franz’s great-grandson acquired property on Market Square, and the fifth generation of the Kirchhoff family reopened the business in 1997. The legendary deli once again delights hungry locals in a space that perfectly blends history and modern expectations.
The deli menu at Kirchhoff's is a crowd-pleaser that includes all of the classics. From a massive Reuben to its famous Club, your favorite sandwich is bound to be served up at this deli counter.
Long lines typically mean excellent food, so don't let the lunch crowd scare you away. The fresh sandwiches, soups, salads, and more are definitely worth the wait.
Kirchhoff's also serves up some fantastic pizzas, though we recommend ordering one of the famous sandwiches if it's your first visit. You’ll definitely be tempted to make a return visit as soon as you take your first bite. Or, plan on visiting when you're really hungry and feast on a little bit of everything!
Given that the family's roots are in the bakery world, it’s no surprise that the artisan bread and baked goods here are out-of-this-world. Some people even make two trips to Kirchhoff's in a single day; first for pastries and coffee in the morning, then again for lunch at the deli and a sweet treat for dessert!
Despite a break in its history, Kirchhoff's is a true landmark and a beloved dining destination in Paducah. It's one of the oldest delis in Kentucky and its sandwiches and other delicious offerings are downright heavenly.
Kirchhoff's Bakery & Deli may have first opened well over a century ago, but this family-owned dining destination continues to take diners straight to sandwich heaven. Have you tried this legendary deli in Paducah? What did you think? Share your experience with us in the comments!
