Kentucky has some restaurants that put together great sandwiches, and you’ll definitely want add these nine to your Kentucky culinary bucket list.
1. The Hot Brown at the Brown Hotel, Louisville
A list about Kentucky sandwiches cannot be complete without the state's most famous dish: the open-face turkey sandwich known as the Hot Brown. The Hot Brown was created at the historic Brown Hotel in downtown Louisville in 1926. It consists of turkey, bacon, tomatoes, and Mornay sauce on a thick piece of Texas toast. 2. The Hot Mess at Cairn Coffee House, Winchester
The Cairn is a non-profit organization that houses a direct trade coffee shop on the first floor, and a community center for teens on the second floor. Stop in the coffee shop for a wide variety of coffees and teas, as well for a light meal or gelato. They are on the Kentucky Beer Cheese Trail, so be sure to try their Hot Mess Sandwich, which is a grilled panini with American cheese, beer cheese, pepperoni, bacon, and crushed Grippos's barbecue-flavored chips. 3. The Twisted Ham and Cheese at Cobblestone Cafe, Ft. Thomas
This northern Kentucky cafe has an adorable appearance and nice patio to enjoy during warmer weather. The Twisted Ham and Cheese is one of their specialties, and it consists of sliced ham, melted cheddar cheese, and spicy brown mustard on a hot pretzel bun. 4. The Pepper Jack Club at Dad's Favorites, Lexington
Dad's Favorites is a popular deli in Lexington. They have two locations and sell their delicious cheese spreads in stores around the area. The Pepper Jack Club is country ham, smoked turkey, and bacon on a French roll. Dad's Favorites is located at 820 Lane Allen Road in the Garden Springs Shopping Center in Lexington. Their newest location is at 236 E. Main Street in Lexington.
5. Kirchhoff's Famous Club at Kirchhoff's Bakery and Deli, Paducah
Like all of the sandwiches at Kirchhoff's, their Famous Club is fresh and made-to-order. They use artisan breads, and many of their ingredients came from local farmers' markets. It is piled high with turkey, ham, bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes on sourdough bread. Don't forget to leave room for one of their freshly baked cookies or pastries. 6. The William and Mary at The Cafe, Louisville
The Cafe is truly a hidden gem. Located in a renovated warehouse, The Cafe is tucked away in an industrial neighborhood of Louisville, but it has some of the best sandwiches in the whole state. You must try the William and Mary, which is thinly sliced corned beef, Swiss cheese, red onion, lettuce, tomato, and spicy mustard on Milwaukee rye. 7. The Reuben at Stella's Kentucky Deli, Lexington
Stella's Kentucky Deli is a farm-to-table restaurant and deli located in a historic house in downtown Lexington. Get a classic reuben piled high with corned beef, kraut, Swiss cheese and Thousand Island dressing. It will blow your mind. 8. The Suzie-Q at Griff's Deli, Bowling Green
Griff's is a casual and relaxed lunch spot that is popular among Western Kentucky University students. The Suzie-Q is oven roasted chicken rubbed with several spices and then tossed in barbecue sauce. It is then served with sliced green apples and provolone cheese. 9. The Wiseguy at Lizzie B's Cafe Bakery, Prestonsburg
Lizzie B's not only has great sandwich options, but there's also a great craft beer selection and a huge and varied menu if you're not feeling like a sandwich. They also regularly have live music. The Wiseguy is meatballs and provolone cheese smothered in tomato sauce. Lizzie B's is located at 2010 KY-321, Prestonsburg, KY 41653.
