There’s No Restaurant In The World Like This One In Kansas
When it comes to dining in Kansas, there are plenty of delicious options to choose from… from family-style chicken joints to giant themed restaurants filled with life-sized dinosaurs, there is no shortage of places to go to enjoy a memorable meal. However, this one Topeka-area cafe may just be the most memorable of them all. Here’s why:
Located in the small town of Dover, the iconic Sommerset Hall Cafe is a historic establishment with a fascinating story dating back to when the building was opened as the Sage General Store in the 1800s before becoming the official home for the local Lodge and then being purchased, remodeled, and reopened by Everette and Judy Thomas in 2006. After the cafe opened for business, it didn’t take long for it to gain popularity for both its home-cooked meals and friendly service. One part of the menu, however, makes the Sommerset Cafe a Kansas institution… can you guess what it is?
If you guessed desserts (namely pie), you’d be correct!
In 2008, the Sommerset Cafe received national attention after pie maker Norma Grubb’s scrumptious Coconut Cream Pie was named the “Best Pie in America” by ABC’s Good Morning America. Unfortunately, Norma passed away in 2011, but both her spirit and legendary pie recipe live on at this Dover favorite.
