Everyone In Kansas Absolutely Loves These 10 Foods And Drinks

Kansas is known for its unique traditional foods, including barbecue and bierocks.

Let’s play a little game. When I mention a certain city or state, tell me which food item or drink first comes to mind. Philadelphia? New York? Chicago? I’m assuming you answered cheese steak, pizza, and cheesecake, right? (Just humor me and pretend I’m correct.) Now, what about Kansas? Which popular foods come to mind? The Sunflower State is home to several traditional cuisines, including the 10 Kansas foods listed below.

1. Barbecue

Kansas City barbecue trumps ALL!

2. Zwiebach

Zwiebach, a traditional Mennonite side dish, is a soft dinner roll that's made with potatoes, water, sugar, butter, and eggs.

3. Bierocks

Bierocks, or cabbage rolls as my grandma used to call them, are a meat, cabbage, and onion filled pocket pastry that originated in Eastern Europe.

4. Lefse

This Norwegian treat is composed of potato, flour, butter, and cream. You can top it with even more butter for a breakfast delight.

5. Homemade Chicken & Noodles

My Grandma Velora, who was born and raised in Kansas, had the best homemade chicken and noodles recipe, which was passed down to her from her German ancestors.

6. Corned Beef and Cabbage

Who says you have to wait for St. Patty's Day to enjoy some old fashioned corned beef and cabbage? Kansans beg to differ!

7. Homemade Breads

What do you expect us to do with all of this wheat?

8. Fried Chicken

I consider myself to be somewhat of a fried chicken connoisseur, and I have to say that nobody else makes fried chicken as good as Kansans.

9. Loose Meat Sandwiches

Think "Sloppy Joes" without the sloppy.

10. Corn on the Cob

In addition to wheat, we have a large abundance of corn that we like to grill, steam, fry, slather with butter, and enjoy.
