Kansas Cryptids

June 07, 2022

What are some creepy legendary cryptids in Kansas?

Kansas might be a pretty low-key place in general, but it’s not without its spooky urban legends, many of which include cryptids. Some notable cryptids in Kansas – or at least said to be in Kansas – include the nightmarish Native American legend called the Wendigo. Many Native peoples across the North American continent have beliefs in some kind of Wendigo-esque creature, which is compelling (and creepy). It is always hungry, searching for dinner to make out of wayward souls, and varies in appearance from myth to myth. Despite its status as just that – a myth – there are still reports of Wendigo sightings in Kansas from time to time.

Are there any weird, mythical creatures in Kansas?

To continue on the above point, what are some other mythical creatures in Kansas that are said to be real? Sioux and Crow peoples both have legends of a headless entity – called “Two-Face” among the Sioux and “Red Woman” among the Crow – thought to be a harbinger of very bad luck if spotted. Honestly, we kind of think spotting a headless body of any kind is a pretty bad omen. Yikes. This is one of those creepy things in Kansas we just don’t want to think about.

What are some eerie Kansas cryptid stories?

Another famous Kansas cryptid story is that of the Deer Lady, a spirit responsible for love and fertility, who appears in the form of – you guessed it – a deer. She can be a harbinger of change and growth, too, and though most appearances of her are pretty benign, she’s still a force to be reckoned with, as she does not tolerate adulterous or sexually promiscuous men and is said to lead them into the woods before tramping them to death. Other than her (and the other Kansas cryptids and mythos mentioned here), there are others, like your traditional Bigfoot sightings, among other things.
