The Columbus Junction Bridge, also known as Lovers Leap, was first built in 1886, then reconstructed in 1904. In 1922, the bridge collapsed on two people, and was rebuilt to the current 262-foot bridge.
Even before the bridge collapsed, it had a spooky reputation. The rumor goes that a young Indian woman heard that her lover had died in a battle. Heartbroken, she threw herself from the bridge to the rocky ravine below, where she met her death. She is said to be buried at the bottom of the ravine.
Although nobody really knows the truth of the story, the local legend says the bridge is now haunted by the doomed Indian maiden. Apparently, if you go there at night, you may hear her crying over her lost lover.
The bridge's history is neatly documented for visitors on a sign next to the bridge. As for the legend of the Indian maiden, though, only the trees know.
