The Amana General Store is in the charming and historic Amana Colonies.
The Amanas are a settlement of seven villages built by German Pietists who fled persecution in their homeland and settled there.
The settlers lived a communal life here until the mid-1930s.
They pursued a life independent from industrialized America. The economy was based on hand-crafted goods and farming.
The Amana General Store has been in continuous operation since the 1850s.
The sandstone and frame building was constructed in 1858, with a first floor store and a second floor residence, and the goods sold there reflect the community’s long history of quality and craftsmanship.
Combining three stores in one building, the Amana General Store has it all.
You can find an assortment of local and important goods, like sauces, jams and jellies, locally crafted cutlery, gifts, candy, and much more.
On the lower level is the Amana Coffee & Tea Company.
You'll find an amazing variety of high-quality, locally roasted flavored coffee here. They sell amazing flavors like spicy cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, snickerdoodle and more.
They also offer high quality bagged and loose teas.
There’s even a Christmas room.
The Christmas room features Christmas collectibles, ornaments and trims.
The General Store is surrounded by Amana’s many historic shops and restaurants.
In the Amanas, you can find traditional German food, old-fashioned candy and ice cream, handmade furniture, antiques and so much more.
Located at 4423 220th Trail, Amana, IA.
