This 70-Year-Old Pizzeria Is One of the Most Nostalgic Destinations in Iowa
Maybe the best old-school pizzeria in Iowa, Mabe's Pizza recently celebrated its 70-year milestone—and the pies are as delicious as ever.
Decorah, Iowa, is such a beautiful town and so rich in history that it feels like there's a great story behind every building and around every corner. That goes for the restaurants, too—Mabe's Pizza is not your ordinary pizzeria, and this beloved old-school pizzeria in Iowa has been around for more than 70 years. Starting out as Mabel's Lunchroom in 1953, its original owner was never planning to run a pizzeria—and certainly not one of Iowa's best. But today, this Decorah stalwart is just as packed with hungry customers as it was when it all began. And it's not hard to see why. Their pizzas are both delicious and seriously inventive. The menu has come a long way since the old-school place made its debut, but it still does the classics just as well as it ever did. So come with us, grab a slice, and discover why Mabe's Pizza is such a beloved spot for Hawkeye State residents.
Mabe's Pizza is a Decorah, Iowa, institution that's often packed with customers looking for a delicious, reasonably-priced meal—and it's been that way since 1953. Mabel White opened the eatery as Mabel's Lunchroom and originally intended it to be a sandwich shop—until one bold student asked her if she would make a pizza instead. Mabe's Lunchroom became Mabe's Pizza, and the rest is more than 70 years of history.
Today, you'll definitely want to start your meal with some breadsticks with zesty marinara dipping sauce. Pizza is the star attraction, and you can choose everything from old-school pepperoni to a frequently updated list of speciality pies. This being Iowa, you will, of course, find a taco pizza on the menu. We love that crunch and spice!
But the hometown favorite is the Around the Garden, with pepperoni, sausage, and a bunch of delicious veggies. Frankly, with Mabe's impeccable sauce and perfect thin crust, you'll be happy with any pizza you order.
Technically speaking, one cannot live by pizza alone, so the menu also features an assortment of appetizers, salads, and sandwiches. No meal here is complete without a massive cookie topped with ice cream—it comes out like a delicious dessert pizza of sorts!
