The Roseman Bridge is famously haunted. In 1883, a prisoner escaped from the Madison County Jail. A group of men came the sheriff’s aid, chasing the man to Roseman bridge.
The convict entered the bridge and the sheriff instructed his men to split up into two groups and surround the bridge to trap the man.
In the confusion, someone discharged their firearm, and members of the posse were injured.
The convict screamed, and then disappeared. No one ever saw him again.
Stories about the haunted bridge are plentiful. People report feeling a cold spot in the middle of the bridge as they walk through. Others say the hair on their dog’s back stands up as they walk through the bridge.
Mike Sutton, leader of Central Iowa Paranormal Investigators, reports picking up an EVP (electronic voice phenomenon) that said, "just leave" during one of his group’s investigations of the site.
Visitors have seen full body apparitions, heard voices shouting, and felt the bridge vibrating when there is no one else around.
The middle of the bridge is extremely dark at night, and bats roost in the rafters. It’s naturally a spooky place. The Roseman Bridge is an important piece of history.
If you are interested in experiencing paranormal activity at the bridge, plan to go at night. There may be a logical explanation for the things that people have seen and heard at this bridge, but there’s only one way to find out.
