You’ll Never Get Enough Of The River Views You Find Hiking Through Effigy Mounds National Monument In Iowa
Most Americans think Iowa’s a flat state with nothing but farms and cornfields, and we can’t really blame them! Every time Iowa’s on the TV or in a movie, our more rural counties seem to have starring roles. It might be a surprise to many that Iowa is actually home to rolling hills, staggering cliffs, and bluffs that seem to reach the sky. Enjoy some invigorating elevation gain and the best river views in Iowa when you visit Effigy Mounds National Monument.
The Driftless area of Iowa is known for its elevation changes, cliffs, and unique topography - thanks to it being untouched by glaciers during the last ice age. Way up here, you'll find Effigy Mounds National Monument.
You can explore miles of trail that wind up and down the cliffs, bluffs, and hills of the monument - which is a sacred site for indigenous tribes that have historically used this space for burial mounds.
As you walk through the pathways, you'll see several of the larger mounds on the sides of the trail. Many of them are made in the shapes of animals, to honor the spirits of the deceased.
Many of the trails lead to spectacular views of the Mississippi River - so take your time, and take it all in!
In all seasons, the sights will take your breath away! Whether you're looking for the colors of fall, the signs of a new spring, the miles of green in summer, or a soft blanket of snow in the winter, you'll have a birds-eye view.
Find trail maps and information on AllTrails, here. The National Park Service website has information about the park’s access and operating hours, as well as any updates to note before you plan your visit.
