Haunted Places In Iowa

What are some of the most haunted places in Iowa?

This haunted road trip leads us to the scariest places in Iowa. Here are a few highlights.

  • Mathias Ham House (2241 Lincoln Ave., Dubuque, IA): Built in 1856, this monumental structure earns the star as housing the oldest building in Iowa, Arriandeaux Cabin. In addition, the historic site includes the Humke Schoolhouse from Centralia and a historic granary. This living museum offers guided tours led by historic interpreters who share the area's rich history and life on the Mississippi River during the Victorian era. The home was built by Mathias Ham, and sadly at least four members of the family died there. One of his daughters, Sarah, the last person living in the house at the time, reportedly shot and killed an intruder one night. On certain evenings after the dark envelopes the sky, the dead intruder’s lamplight has been spotted wandering through the rooms of the mansion.
  • Grand Opera House (135 W. Eighth St., Dubuque, IA):  One of the most beautiful theaters in Iowa, the Grand Opera House, was built in 1889. With so much anticipation, opening night on Aug. 14, 1890, drew in more than 800 customers, each paying a whopping $5 to see French composer Georges Bizet’s Carmen. Some of the greatest entertainers of the day starred on the stage in the following years, such as Al Jolson, John Phillip Sousa, Will Rogers, and George M. Cohan. Still hosting many events, the Grand also seems to host a few ghosts. Reports of odd happenings include unexplained voices, mischief, and unsolved electrical problems. Discover more on the Grand Opera House website.
  • Oakland Cemetery Black Angel (1000 Brown St. Iowa City, IA): Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City has been the main burial ground since 1843. Mostly a peaceful place, one gravestone stands out as pretty creepy. Erected in 1913, the Black Angel monument has drawn many people to its side responding to reports of the paranormal. Some have witnessed the statue changing color from bronze to black. Local legends include any girl who is kissed at the angel’s feet in the moonlight will die in six months, and giving the angel a kiss is said to make the person's heart stop. While in the area this place is definitely worth a stop — especially at night.
