These formations can best be seen on the Pictured Rocks Trail - a 1.3-mile out-and-back trail with moderately challenging terrain. Pictured Rocks County Park is a 726-acre wildlife management area that has some stunning views and big surprises.
With the term "rocks" in its name, it's no surprise that there are some unique rock formations here - both natural and man-made.
The highlight is the steep limestone cliffs, formed long ago. They provide impressive vistas as you hike the area.
The 1.3-mile Pictured Rocks Trail is considered a moderately challenging route, but it is ideal for avid hikers in good health.
It's a fairly isolated trail, which makes it a great place to discover all the little secrets along the way.
There are many small alcoves and overlooks here that make it an amazing place to overlook the Maquoketa River.
When you're done hiking, the main part of the park also has some more developed areas where you can rest after your time on the trail.
