While the idea of supper clubs seems like a relic of a bygone era, there are still some beloved supper clubs alive and well in Iowa today. These homey spots are fixtures in their communities, serving up meat and potatoes, cocktails and salad bars to generation after generation of loyal patrons. Supper clubs were at their height of popularity in the ‘30s and ‘40s and often included not just dinner but dancing, and some even had an option of renting a room for the night. While those days are long gone, some incredible supper clubs are here to stay. Here are 10 of the best here in Iowa.
1. Lighthouse Inn, Cedar Rapids
Built in 1912, the Lighthouse is one of the oldest supper clubs in Iowa. Their specialty is fall off the bone BBQ ribs and families have been coming for generations to eat them. The restaurant also has some interesting history, with patrons such as Al Capone and John Dillinger back in the day.
2. Townhouse Supper Club, Wellsburg
The Townhouse Supper Club is located in the tiny town of Wellsburg, and one of its specialties is a giant pork tenderloin. The sandwich won the 2006 IPPA Best Tenderloin award, so they’re doing something right!
3. Moracco Supper Club, Dubuque
This family owned restaurant has been in business for over 40 years, and they’re serving up delicious classics like prime rib, lobster tail, cod and shrimp, just to name a few. They also have plenty of mouth-watering appetizers like breaded mushrooms and cheese curds.
4. Signature’s Supper Club, Northwood
Serving delicious dinners as well as a Sunday brunch, Signatures Supper Club has it all. Their prime rib is especially good, and they also have a big variety of steaks, served with texas toast, soup or salad and a choice of potato.
5. White House Supper Club-Lounge, Saint Lucas
This classic establishment has incredible prime rib, as well as complimentary garlic toast with many of the entrees. With their comfy atmosphere and large array of meat, potatoes and cheesy appetizers, you’ll definitely leave satisfied.
6. Ced-Rel Supper Club, Cedar Rapids
Ced-Rel Supper club is known for its steak and seafood. They also have a specialty appetizer of jumbo shrimp cocktail stuffed with cream cheese (yum). Pair that with a homey and retro atmosphere and you’ll feel right at home.
7. Kalmes Club 528, Cascade
Because Kalmes Club 528 has been voted best prime rib & caterer for 15+ years at Best Fest, the prime rib is a definite must try. They also specialize in BBQ ribs and shrimp scampi with a great salad bar.
8. Hale Tap & Supper Club, Wyoming
The Hale Tap & Supper Club in Wyoming has great food at great prices. Try their giant pork tenderloin or the prime rib for a delicious and memorable meal.
9. Spillway Supper Club, Harpers Ferry
Spillway Supper Club is a homey, welcoming, no frills establishment with a great prime rib special, plenty of beer on tap, and a wide variety of other American classics.
10. That Place Steakhouse, Conrad
That Place Steakhouse in Conrad specializes in mouth-watering steak and prime rib. They also have a wide variety of other classic entrees, like breaded walleye and pork chops with thick slices of Texas toast and huge baked potatoes.
