A Bit Of An Unexpected Natural Wonder, Few People Know There Are Sand Dunes Hiding In Idaho

When you think of sand dunes in Idaho, Bruneau Dunes State Park is likely the first thing to come to mind. However, many Idahoans, particularly those from the panhandle, are surprised to discover that these aren’t the only sand dunes in Idaho. In fact, there is one that is quite unexpected in southeastern Idaho — the St. Anthony Sand Dunes.

St. Anthony, Idaho is a small town with a population of approximately 4,000 residents. This town is located on Highway 20 and is a charming community you will pass as you drive into Island Park, one of the most beautiful mountain towns in the Gem State.

However, this small town is also known as the home to an unexpected natural wonder in Idaho — the St. Anthony Sand Dunes.

Located along the edge of Idaho’s volcanic Snake River Plain, you will find 10,600 acres of white quartz sand.

These dunes were actually created by the wind as it would carry sand from the Snake River and the Tetons. The sand was left on hills that were once active lava vents.
You may be surprised to know that some of the dunes reach up to 400 feet tall, creating quite a mesmerizing sight and the ultimate playground.

These sand dunes are a must-visit area for all off-road vehicle enthusiasts. Exploring the dunes is a heart-racing way to spend the day outdoors.

But, this isn’t the only way to enjoy the dunes. The St. Anthony Sand Dunes are also popular with hikers and equestrians. Although, if you do explore these dunes, you are strongly encouraged to avoid damaging the vegetation as this greatly impacts the wildlife that call this area home.
While these sand dunes are a terrific day trip destination, you can also spend an entire weekend here. Egin Lakes Campground features 48 campsites that are the ideal basecamp for an outdoor adventure in southeastern Idaho.
