One thing we'll never take for granted about the Gem State is the accessibility of nature's beauty, even in the most urbanized places. Specifically, surrounding the state's capital city of Boise is an abundance of foothills where you can escape the hustle and bustle of city life. These foothills are home to an extensive trail system that includes hikes of varying distances and levels of challenge. One of these is the Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail, which offers sweet respite from the city below and is a stunning adventure all year long.
When you feel like reconnecting with nature but don't feel like making a long drive, a visit to the Boise foothills always delivers. One of the area's most stunning trails is the Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail, and you can rest assured it'll take you away from it all.
It's amazing to think this heavenly trail is just a short drive outside of Boise. To find the trailhead from downtown, simply follow 8th Street north towards the foothills. The street turns into a gravel road (high clearance is recommended) and takes you right to the trail's start.
The Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail is a secluded single-track trail that's only open to foot traffic, so no need to worry about mountain bikes whizzing past you. This trail is a true respite that allows you to relax, breathe, and take in the gorgeous scenery.
The trail is just over six miles long and does contain some moderate elevation gain. However, the climb is slow and steady, making it suitable for even beginning hikers. Plus, the views are so good that you may not even notice yourself working up a sweat!
Complete with wide-open views of the foothills and the city in the distance, there's no shortage of fantastic scenery at Hulls Gulch. As you chug along through the canyon, you'll notice a few charming foot bridges and a small waterfall that's known to flow during the springtime.
Consisting of nearly 300-acres, a lot of work has gone into preserving Hulls Gulch Reserve and keeping it this pristine. Most of the reserve was acquired thanks to community effort during the early '90s, and it's become a beloved destination to learn about the area's unique natural history.
Best of all, Hulls Gulch is beautiful all year long. Whether you see it covered in a light blanket of frosty white snow or covered in lush green foliage, this landscape never disappoints. The next time you need an escape, be sure to check it out! You can find the trail map here.
