Located around 62 miles northeast of Mountain Home, the remnants of Rocky Bar makes for a fascinating day trip when you're itching for some exploration. This ghost town has been abandoned for decades but it's definitely worth getting to know.
The story of Rocky Bar's past is similar to many of Idaho's old ghost towns. Founded in 1863 after gold was discovered along the Feather River, Rocky Bar saw significant success during its early days. It was even considered as a possible capital for the Idaho Territory.
The town experienced its peak during the late 1800s when it was home to over 2,500 people. It even served as the county seat of Alturas County for awhile until Hailey took over the seat in 1881.
Of course, this prosperous mining town didn't stay prosperous for long. A massive fire wiped out much of Rocky Bar in 1892. The town was rebuilt and mining continued, but the settlement never fully recovered. The fire could be considered the beginning of Rocky Bar's end.
The town hasn't had a permanent population since the 1960s and visiting it today would have you believe it hasn't seen a single soul since then. Many of the town's century-old structures are still standing, but they've definitely seen better days.
Strolling through the eerily silent town, you can't help but think of all the stories that must've taken place in this once thriving community. There's simply no telling what would've become of Rocky Bar if only a few things had gone differently!

Directions: From Mountain Home, take ID-51 N to Highway 20 E and continue for 31 miles. Turn left onto Forest 61 and drive for 18 miles before turning right onto N Pine-Featherville Road. You'll continue for 10 miles before turning left and continuing onto Forest 156.
