While the Teton Mountain Range is technically in Wyoming, here in Idaho, we get to admire its spectacular views. One way to do this is by exploring the Teton Scenic Byway which takes you along the western slopes of the Teton Mountain Range. This is one of the most beautiful scenic drives in Idaho and one of the best road trips you can take in America. Don’t believe us? Check it out for yourself!
The Teton Scenic Byway is just under 70 miles long. It begins on Idaho 31 in Swan Valley and will take you to Idaho 47 at Ashton. You’ll want to plan for at least 2.5 hours of drive time and many additional hours to explore and admire the views.
This scenic byway in Idaho is beautiful to explore all year long. However, this road truly shines when the fall foliage is at its peak and during the late spring months when the seas of wildflowers appear.
Along this drive, you’ll receive some of the most incredible views of the Tetons. These mountains are not only majestic, but they are more than 10 million years old.
Here’s a fun fact about the Teton Mountains: they grow approximately 1 inch every 100 years. The largest peak, which is Grand Teton, is an impressive 13,772 feet above sea level.
Before you even begin this scenic drive in Swan Valley, we suggest you spend some time in this beautiful small town.
Swan Valley is home to only 200 residents but it sure will leave a lasting impression. You can spend the day exploring the town or the wilderness around it. This small town is located on the banks of the South Fork of the Snake River and is where you can find excellent fly-fishing, water rafting, and kayaking opportunities.
Along this scenic byway, you’ll also pass through the small town of Victor. This is the largest town in the area with nearly 2,000 residents.
Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to stop by Victor Emporium. This unique store in Victor has a little something for everyone from toys and treats to fishing licenses. This is also the perfect place to enjoy a famous huckleberry shake or grab a soda from the old-fashioned soda fountain.
As you drive from one small town to the next, you’ll not only enjoy mountain views but you’ll drive through gorgeous fields. This is one road trip you won't want to end.
If you want to get out and stretch your legs, hike the Ashton to Tetonia Trail. You can follow this trail all the way to the end of the Teton Scenic Byway in Ashton.
This is a 29.6-mile trail that follows an old railroad grade. If you complete this trail in its entirety, you’ll come to three bridge crossings, historic train trestles, and more. This is a gravel and dirt trail so you’ll want to be prepared with proper footwear and if biking, mountain bikes are recommended.
