Welcome to Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse! Located in Kihei’s Kalama Village on the island of Maui, this casual barbecue joint serves up mouthwateringly delicious Texas-style smoked barbecue meats.
Tucked away on a side street in a nondescript industrial building with sheet-metal roofing, it’s likely that you’ll smell the restaurant before you see it.
After growing up smoking meats in Pennsylvania, Owner Chris Schobel decided to revive a struggling barbecue joint when he moved to Maui in 2013 where he combines North Carolina and Texas barbecue styles.
Whether you enjoy burnt ends, pulled pork, brisket, or ribs, you’ll find that the barbecue served at Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse will satisfy your taste buds. You can also enjoy tasty pork belly, chicken, Texas hot links, or a variety of delicious sandwiches.
What’s authentic barbecue without the sides? From potato salad, cornbread, and mac and cheese to coleslaw, chili garlic beans, and potato chips, the sides are almost as delicious as the meats — almost.
Smoked for five hours and served with a vinegar-laced barbecue sauce with beef fat for added flavor, the ribs are a hit, as is the cornbread, which is made from a creamed-corn batter.
After ordering at the counter, you can take your meal to go or eat at one of the small tables in the narrow air-conditioned dining room or at the even smaller shaded outdoor picnic table area.
Don’t take our word for it, though: the Maui Time Weekly has voted Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse as the best barbecue joint on the island for three years in a row. The eatery was also featured in the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives” with Guy Fieri.
