Georgia is a beautiful place to spend the holidays, each and every year. Despite the fact that the temperatures will be inching closer to the snow-making-line, Georgia is still filled with warmth and kindness which make it the perfect place to visit during the holiday season. I'll always come home to Georgia for the holidays, and here's why.
1. The variety of stunning Christmas trees.
There are many places throughout the state which boast some spectacular Christmas trees all lit up beautifully. Jekyll Island, for example, hosts a stellar lighting event, worth heading to the coast for.
2. All the true southern holiday food that I won’t find anywhere else.
Realistically, nobody cooks holiday meals better than my family. So to be anywhere else during the holidays, eating other types of food or cuisines, is just not right. Bring on the sweet potatoes and casseroles, darn it!
3. Cheering on my favorite football team.
Every December we'll watch the SEC Championship, and pray to all who is listening that Georgia advances to the National Championship every year. And if not? Then there's always next year.
4. Campfires and s’mores all day.
It gets just cold enough in Georgia to light a fire and roast up some delicious s'mores. Nothing says "home for the holidays" quite like smelling the campfire scent floating through the Georgian air.
5. All of the spectacular holiday displays.
Georgia goes all out for the holidays. There are SO many different holiday displays throughout the state it's hard to choose a favorite. The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, The Rock Ranch, Stone Mountain, just to name a few. It's hard not to get into the holiday spirit whenever you visit these festive lights.
6. Things truly can be quite beautiful when it snows.
Yes, snow can be messy. Snow can get dirty. Snow can be a royal pain. But, it also can be quite beautiful at times. And nothing says Christmas like waking up to fresh snow outside your window. Call me a romantic.
7. But then again, the coast is still pretty dang warm.
If I don't want to be cold all the time, I can head to the coast! The weather stays pretty even-keeled, which make for fun holiday activities, like Movies on the Green in Jekyll Island, where you can watch holiday favorites with the whole family.
8. Watching the holiday parades in person.
What's Christmas without taking in a fun parade? Watching the excitement in New York is not enough for my family. We need to get out there and experience the parade and be together as a community to truly enjoy it.
9. The holiday shopping is worth the trip.
You can shop your heart out in Georgia during the holidays. Beyond just the normal, every day shopping opportunities, holiday markets pop up here and there, too. Christmas on the Riverfront in Savannah, for example, can easily knock off everyone on your shopping list in one day.
10. There is always something festive going on.
Georgia knows how to celebrate the holidays. There is always something going on, always something lit up with joy and cheer, or a reminder of why this is easily the most wonderful time of the year.
11. I can ice skate outside!
Ice skating is a great way to get outside and enjoy the weather and the holiday spirit. Bring your friends, bring your family, and loop around the rink while holiday music plays. Centennial Park, for example, has awesome ice skating opportunities.
12. All of the phenomenally decorated homes.
I love that I can drive down nearly any road in Georgia and the lights and festive decorations are in abundance. Georgians know how to show their appreciation for the holiday, and it easily puts me in the spirit.
13. Because home is where family is.
Spending holidays without my family is never an option. My family is what makes each year special and memorable, and for that reason alone I'll always go home for the holidays.
