Few People Know About This Massive Georgia Rock Outcropping
Ever feel like you’ve seen all there is to see in the Peach State? Don’t worry; there are always more natural wonders in Georgia to discover! One great one that many people aren’t familiar with is Heggie’s Rock. This magnificent rock outcropping in Columbia County is so distinctive that it’s been declared a National Natural Landmark. It’s got a unique ecosystem that’s not found anywhere else in the world and is home to fascinating plants and creatures. Because it’s such a delicate area, Heggie’s Rock Preserve is not typically open to visitors, but there are occasionally guided tours available through The Nature Conservancy.
Heggie's Rock is incredibly massive. It's a 130-acre rock outcropping that is more than 70 feet above the surrounding area. It's not far from Little Kiokee Creek, near Augusta.
The exposed granite is uniquely beautiful, but it's the life forms here that are particularly interesting. Species of crustaceans have been discovered in the pools here that are not known to exist anywhere else in the world.
The landscape here is quite sensitive to erosion, so the preserve is not typically open to the public for visitation. It's owned by The Nature Conservancy, a group that's working to protect the delicate ecosystem here.
Even if you aren't able to go in person and can only admire it through photos, Heggie's Rock Preserve is such a stunning natural wonder in Columbia County, Georgia!
Have you ever heard of Heggie’s Rock Preserve? You can learn more information about this beautiful place and keep an eye out for tour openings at The Nature Conservancy website or the group’s Facebook page.
