The Peach State's big cities are great - if you've followed Only In Georgia for a while, you know that we love recommending spots all over the state, from the Atlanta area, Savannah, Macon, and more. But we've got to say, there's something particularly special about the amazing small towns in Georgia. These places may not have the population numbers that you'll find in our urban areas, but they provide a unique insight into the culture of our great state. You'll find great people in Georgia's tiniest towns, plus attractions like delicious restaurants, parks, and so much more. One adorable little town in North Georgia that makes for a perfect day trip is the unincorporated community of Suches. This little spot in Union County is so much fun! Here's an itinerary for a day trip to Suches, GA:
Suches is a quiet community in the mountains with around 1,000 residents. It's right in the heart of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests, so as you can imagine, there's plenty of great scenery and lots of amazing hikes near here.
One of our favorite trails in Suches, GA is the trek to Long Creek Falls. The two-mile trail is a surprisingly easy out-and-back route that will take you along the mighty Appalachian Trail right to the falls.
The trailhead is accessible via Forest Route 58. Just make sure you stay on the correct path. Following the blue blazes will take you to to falls.
And what a gorgeous set of falls they are! Long Creek Falls are about 50 feet in height. The beautiful cascade looks like something from a story book.
Doesn't it look magnificent shaded by the surrounding trees?
All that hiking likely worked up an appetite, so your next stop is the Wildcat BBQ and General Store.
This place is such a throwback - not only is it an old-timey general store, it also serves up incredible barbecue.
You'll find delicious food here. Of course, the barbecue is the big draw, but there are some great sides, too.
In fact, the menu here is surprisingly varied. Breakfast, prime rib, and more all make appearances at Wildcat BBQ.
You can learn more about this tasty restaurant from the Wildcat BBQ & General Store Facebook page.
