Breweries might not be the first place to come to mind when you think of family friendly destinations in Georgia, but many of them are great spots to bring kids to! While the main draws at breweries is, of course, the beer, many also have great outdoor areas. They're typically the site of various festivals, concerts, and events, and often host food trucks and even have outdoor games like cornhole. One brewery in Georgia that definitely fits this bill is Terrapin Beer Company in Athens. The beloved spot is tucked away in an industrial area of the quirky college town, and it's a delightful spot to visit no matter your age.
Terrapin Beer Company opened up in 2002. It's been an incredibly popular Athens spot ever since, appealing to both college students and townies.
In 2016, a majority stake in the company was sold to Molson Coors, meaning it's no longer considered a craft brewery. Even as the brewery expands nationally, it still has a beloved connection to Athens and is heavily involved in the community.
Athens is renowned for its music scene, and fittingly, the brewery was named for a Grateful Dead album, Terrapin Station.
Terrapin's 45,000-square foot facility regularly hosts concerts. There's an indoor stage as well as an outdoor area for larger shows.
Plenty of other events are held here throughout the year.
There are recurring cornhole league and trivia nights, plus Cars and Coffee shows. Less common events including an annual chili cook-off in the fall. Several local animal rescue groups host occasional adoption events at the brewery.
Most of the events held at the brewery feature food trucks. You can also bring your own food: there are picnic tables outside, and the beautiful yard is a great place for a picnic.
Even when there's not an event going on, the free tour is a delightful and educational experience.
Kids are welcome on the tour, but of course, you have to be 21 or older to sample the brews!
Reservations are not required for a tour. Note that you do need to wear closed-toed shoes for safety purposes. You can get more information on Terrapin's website.
