Hiding Behind The Storefront Of A ‘TV And Repair’ Shop, Don’s Speakeasy Is One Of Wisconsin’s Best-Kept Secrets

Don’s Diner in Milwaukee has transformed into a grocery store with a hidden speakeasy that requires a secret phrase for entry.

Some of the state’s best places are hiding right under our noses. For instance, did you know there’s a speakeasy operating under the guise of a TV and repair shop? Not only is it hidden from plain view, but you’ve got to utter a secret phrase to gain entry. It’s truly one of Wisconsin's best-kept secrets…and it’s one secret you’ll want to be in on! Take a look:

In 2020, Don’s Diner in Milwaukee became Don’s Grocery and Liquor. It’s not just the diner’s moniker that’s changed, though.

What was once Don’s dining area is now occupied by shelves stocked with groceries and a food-service counter known for its burgers and shakes.

The biggest change of all, though, is the addition of Don’s TV and Repair, which is actually a speakeasy!

Its entrance is hidden, so patrons have to enter through Don's Grocery and Liquor and utter a secret phrase to the clerk on duty.

(The phrase is provided on Don’s website.)

Once through the hidden entrance and into the dimly-lit dining area, you’re sure to feel like you’ve discovered one of the state’s best-kept secrets…and you have!

Like a life-sized time capsule, the speakeasy’s interior is filled with vintage electronics and nods to retro brands.

Open for brunch and dinner, it’s the perfect early-morning AND late-night spot.

Die-hard Don’s Diner fans will be happy to know that the speakeasy serves up the smash burgers, boozy shakes, and Fruity Pebbles pancakes that made the diner a neighborhood classic.

And just like speakeasies of the past, Don’s serves up all your favorite cocktails – and then some. Drink specials, like 10¢ martinis, are also among Don’s many perks.

Ready to pay a visit to Don’s? Service appointments (aka reservations) are highly recommended, as space is extremely limited.
