Here Are The 11 Dishes You Have To Eat In West Virginia Before You Die

Want to get a taste for the real West Virginia? The Mountain State has a pretty diverse culinary scene. It ranges from down-home cooking some of the best pizza in the country (in my opinion). How many of these foods have you had?

1. Fried morel mushrooms

Morel mushrooms are common in Appalachia during the spring, and there are all kinds of delicious things to make with them. All you need to fry them is flour, vegetable shortening and salt.

2. Ramps

Check these out at any of the many ramps dinners held in West Virginia in the spring. They’re delicious.

3. Tudor's Biscuits

You can’t have a list of West Virginia foods and leave off Tudor’s Biscuits. That would be wrong. These are so good. This one, called the Dottie, has egg and cheese and hash browns.

4. DiCarlo's Pizza

This pizza place in Wheeling has been ranked among the best in the nation.

5. A West Virginia hot dog

We have lots of great hot dog places, so these shouldn’t be hard to track down. (Hillbilly Hot Dog and Stewart’s Hot Dogs come to mind.) A typical West Virginia hot dog has mustard, coleslaw and chili/sauce.

6. Pepperoni rolls at Tomaro's Bakery

Have one of West Virginia’s classic foods at one of the the oldest bakeries in the state to serve them.

7. Strawberry Pie at Jim's Spaghetti

For one week each spring, Jim’s Spaghetti in Huntington serves some of the best strawberry pie you’ve ever tasted.

8. Venison

This shouldn’t be too hard to come by; there are lots of deer hunters in West Virginia. Venison is really good.

9. A fish sandwich from Coleman's Fish Market

The sandwiches at this restaurant in Wheeling are famous statewide.

10. Buckwheat Pancakes

These are a tradition in West Virginia, especially in Preston County, which holds an annual Buckwheat Festival.

11. Beans and cornbread

There's nothing like the down-home cooking that you find in West Virginia homes.
