If you love historic buildings, appreciate a good cocktail, and aren't afraid of ghosts, then it's high time you took a trip to Lewisburg, West Virginia. More specifically, you need to set your GPS to the General Lewis Inn on East Washington Street, because inside, you'll find not only a nationally acclaimed bar, but also some of the scariest ghost stories in the state.
Tyler Davidson, head bartender at the General Lewis Inn's Thistle Lodge, is getting a lot of national attention right now.
Why? Because he - and the custom-made cocktails he mixes up for the patrons at the General Lewis Inn - were recently spotlighted in the book "The United States of Cocktails."
Just from that endorsement, you know this bar has to be good. But it gets better.
As we mentioned, the Thistle Lounge is located in the General Lewis Inn in Lewisburg. And the General Lewis Inn in Lewisburg is famous among certain circles for the three ghosts that are rumored to live there. You'll hear about the Lady in White whose picture hangs in one of the rooms or a slave named Ruben who was hanged in what is now the dining room. Rumors also abound of a little lost girl who has been heard laughing and crying as she roams the Inn.
These ghosts are typically sensed in a particular grouping of rooms in the Inn: rooms 202, 206, and 208. But who's to say that you won't feel a little something spooky in the historic old lounge as well, as you sit and sip your custom cocktail?
So whether you believe in ghosts or just want to meet the man from the book and see what all the fuss is about the cocktails here at the General Lewis Inn, be sure to add the Thistle Lounge to your list of stops next time you are in Lewisburg, West Virginia.
And be ready, just in case you run into a ghost. Maybe it will buy you a drink.
