Washington is a very cheesy state, and for that we are thankful. And if you're the type of person who would choose a cheese platter over dessert and whose worst nightmare is lactose intolerance, this list is for you. We've got some fantastic cheese shops here in the Evergreen State, and these seven are especially amazing.
1. Beecher's Handmade Cheese, 1600 Pike Pl., Seattle
This is probably the most famous cheese paradise on this list, but it's an icon for a reason. At the flagship Beecher's location at Pike Place Market, you can watch the cheesemakers at work and enjoy their legendary mac & cheese. Beecher's also has locations in Bellevue, the SeaTac airport, and New York City.
2. Twin Sisters Creamery, 6202 Portal Way, Ferndale
Twin Sisters Creamery is a family operation, inspired by the owners' twin girls. Their signature cheese, Whatcom Blue, is exceptional, but they sell plenty of other varietals in their cheese shop. Stop by Tuesday - Saturday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
3. Black Sheep Creamery, 570 N Market Blvd., Chehalis
Black Sheep Creamery cheeses are fine hand-crafted sheep milk cheeses. The milk comes from the sheep on the owners' farm, and it makes for some seriously scrumptious cheeses.
4. Samish Bay Cheese, 15115 Bow Hill Rd, Bow
The Edison-Bow area is well known for its farm fresh food, and that includes some outstanding local cheeses. Owned and operated by Suzanne and Roger Wechsler, Samish Bay Cheese is a beloved local icon. The shop is open daily, selling cheese made only from local milk.
5. The Mouse Trap, 408 Washington St SE, Olympia
The Mouse Trap is Olympia's only cheese shop, but once you step inside, you'll see why it's the only one the city needs. You can get your delicious local cheeses to-go, or you can enjoy a cheese platter or some fondue at the shop, which is open Tuesday - Saturday.
6. WSU Creamery, 2035 NE Ferdinand's Ln., Pullman
WSU's Cougar Gold is coveted statewide, and for good reason -- it's mouthwatering. When you visit the creamery (and the onsite cheese and ice cream shop, Ferdinand's), you can see the cheesemakers at work and sample some tasty curds.
7. The Cheesemonger's Table, 203 5th Ave S, Ste 1, Edmonds
Not only can you shop for artisanal cheeses at The Cheesemonger's Table, but you can enjoy the best sandwiches of your life or a perfectly assembled charcuterie platter. This shop happens to have the most impressive cheese selection in the greater Seattle area.
These are a few of our finest creameries and cheese shops. And if you're ever in Leavenworth, you'll definitely want to check out this one.
