Serving Up Soft Serve: This Ice Cream Stand in Virginia Won Me Over

Carter Mountain Orchard serves fresh, seasonal soft-serve with some of the most beautiful mountain views in Charlottesville.

There's something nostalgic about soft-serve ice cream. It's rarely the trendiest, and often comes in just a handful of flavors, but, in my opinion, this only adds to its timelessness. It seems as though soft-serve ice cream spots are harder to find these days, but the places that serve it have stood the test of time. My family and I recently ventured to the beautiful Carter Mountain Orchard for an afternoon trip. Known for their fresh produce, Bold Rock Cider, and fresh donuts, this local gem also serves some of the best soft serve in the region.

Tucked away amidst lush forests near Thomas Jefferson's famed Monticello, Carter Mountain Orchard is one of Charlottesville's most unique day trip destinations. It's not so much a hidden gem, especially during the fall season, but if you visit mid-week, you'll escape the crowds. Carter Mountain Orchard began operating commercially in the 1970s, and the land was officially purchased in 1985. Since then, the farm has welcomed visitors to enjoy fruit fresh from the orchard. The U-pick nature of the farm began in 1984, when the owners realized there wouldn't be enough peaches to run the packing house. And so, the farm was opened to the public; pick-your-own fruit was still a relatively new concept, but locals loved it. By popular demand, an annual tradition began.

When you arrive at Carter Mountain, you'll make your way up a steep driveway that winds through the property's beautiful fruit orchards. You'll soon be greeted by one of the area's most stunning Blue Ridge Mountain views—it's truly breathtaking! Walk through the covered farm stand and you'll see some pre-picked produce to browse as well as an impressive gift shop selling all kinds of one-of-a-kind pantry staples and gifts. But if you're like me, you're making a beeline for the ice cream stand just past the farm market.

There are plenty of sweet and savory treats to order, but the soft serve will win you over on a hot day. Only a handful of flavors are offered, and this time of year, it's vanilla, peach, or swirl, which is a combination of the two. I opted for the swirl and was delighted. The peach ice cream was the perfect seasonal treat, with a subtle peach flavor that wasn't overly sweet. And the consistency of the soft serve was perfect.

There's ample seating at Carter Mountain and lots of picnic tables, perfect for families or groups of friends to gather. The farm is also home to Bold Rock Cider, serving refreshing hard cider crafted from local apples. Truly, there's something for everyone here!

Visit the Carter Mountain Orchard website to learn more about planning your visit. Here, you'll find updates about hours and what's currently growing at the farm. Donuts and ice cream are served year-round, but the flavors are seasonal. Looking for somewhere to grab dinner after your visit? Head to Lampo, an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria.
